ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department is investigating after a vehicle struck and severely injured two workers at a road construction site in Elkhart on Tuesday.

The crash happened around 2:07 p.m. near 3900 E Bristol St in Elkhart, authorities say.

"Initial investigation indicates that a Jeep Wrangler traveling westbound on E Bristol St struck two workers in a road work area just before Cobblestone Boulevard," EPD said.

"At the time of the crash, Bristol Street was restricted to only one lane for both eastbound and westbound traffic in the road work area with portable flagging stations assisting in traffic regulation."

One of the workers was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of non life-threatening injuries, and the second worker was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of serious bodily injuries.

Authorities say the adult male driver of the Jeep remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The Elkhart Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team is handling this investigation.
