Two local high school students honored by sheriff's office for putting out arson fire

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- Two southwest Michigan teens were celebrated for their good deeds and quick action on Monday when they were sworn in as Honorary Van Buren County Sheriff's Deputies.

Their honor and distinction were earned on March 13 when the two spotted three juveniles setting fire to a construction trailer in Hartford.

"Rigo Moreles and Kamryn Johnson ran to the trailer with fire extinguishers and put it out," the VBCSO said. "They were able to save the trailer and contents due to their actions."

According to the VBCSO, detectives worked the arson and were able to develop suspects who were ultimately charged for the incident.

"Detectives were working other cases involving the same suspects and linked them to this incident as well," the VBCSO said.

On Monday, April 14, Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott made Rigo and Kamryn Honorary Sheriff’s Deputies for their actions and the Hartford Fire Department also honored them with a certificate for their actions, two new fire extinguishers, and a photo of them putting out the fire.

"It was truly great to see young adults in our community not afraid to do the right thing when it needed to be done," Abbott said. "We see incidents across the United States over and over with people not wanting to get involved, so it was great to see these two lead by example."

Both of the Honorary Deputies attend high school for Hartford Public Schools.

"I send out much thanks to Hartford Fire Department, and Van Buren County Sheriff's office for taking time out of their day to praise good kids who do good things. I'm very proud of my daughter Kami, and her boyfriend Rigo for doing the right thing and stepping up in a time of crisis," Kamryn's father, Mark Johnson said in a social media post.

"Their good deeds were recognized by being appointed as an Honorary Sheriff's Deputy as well as receiving a Community Action Reward from Hartford Fire Department. I'm very proud of these kids and believe positive reinforcement may be a good tool to encourage great decisions in their future."
