WATCH: Traffic stop leads to chase in South Bend Wednesday afternoon

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- What was expected to be a routine traffic stop on Wednesday afternoon turned into a car and foot chase through South Bends northwest side after the suspect tried to evade police.

Authorities say, around 1:55 p.m. SBPD's Strategic Focus Unit was patrolling when an officer observed a traffic infraction near Olive and Roger Streets.

"The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the vehicle fled from the stop, leading to a pursuit," SBPD said.

"The pursuit ultimately ended in the area of Cottage Grove Avenue and Oak Street, where the driver exited the vehicle and continued fleeing on foot. Officers then observed the suspect pull a firearm from his waistband and point it back toward pursuing officers."

Police K9 Zeke was deployed and helped officers apprehend the suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Teelyn Johnson.

One firearm with an extended magazine was recovered, along with suspected marijuana, SBPD said.

Johnson was taken into custody and transported to St. Joseph County Jail, where, as of Thursday afternoon, he awaits a formal charging decision from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
