Mishawaka High School holds signing day for student athletes
MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The Penn High School baseball team continued their winning ways and won back-to-back state championships for the first time in school history!
The Kingsmen defeated top-ranked Center Grove 2-0 in the class 4A state final on Saturday night at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
Penn got the fans out of their seats in the third inning after Cooper Hums scored the game first point thanks to Cam Dobrowski's two-out double down the left field line. He was also batted in following an Evan Tuesley single.
Pitcher Adam Lehmann had a nearly flawless performance. The senior struck out ten batters over six innings and only allowed three hits in the shut-out win.
"In the first inning, I had some jitters, I'd say I really settled it in the second," said Lehmann. "I was really feeling the energy from the crowd and my teammates."
The victory earned Penn their sixth state championship in school history, each of which being won under Hall of Fame coach Greg Dikos.
"This is by far one of the most exciting state final finishes that I have been a part of," said Dykos. "These guys were focused."
They finished the season with an overall record of 27-8.
They are also only the second school in state history to feature the state champions in both baseball and softball. The women's team earned the honor following their 2-1 victory over Indianapolis Roncalli last weekend.
