The Hot Topic: Increase in energy bills and severe weather events

SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- Summer usually brings two things, higher energy bills and severe weather. Both of which are influenced by the warming climate. We can measure this increase by Cooling Degree Days, a measurement that reflects how much energy is needed to cool us down from warmer than average temperatures. 

Since 2021, there has been a 40 percent increase in residential electric bills nationwide because of the higher energy demand. Many customers are concerned their bills will increase in the future. This is a valid concern, given the U.S. has already requested an additional $9.2 billion in utility rate increases.

Tracy Wholf, a former energy and climate journalist, states there are several main drivers for energy increase. However, aging infrastructure and severe weather are likely the forces behind the increase in Michiana. Wholf explains that powers grids are old and need to be repaired. They can also be damaged by severe weather. These things take money and the costs come back to customers. 

The above-normal temperatures could also lead to more severe weather. Consistent warmer than average temperatures can make severe weather more frequent, damaging and battering infrastructure, and giving less time for recovery and repair. Warmer conditions allow for more instability; a key ingredient needed for severe weather.

Nathan Marsili, a Northern Indiana National Weather Service forecaster, explains there's enough evidence to support this claim. However, it becomes challenging when connecting a single event to large scale climate change. This is where climate data and research help. By compiling data over decades, the patterns and trends become clear. 

While there are many factors that can shift summertime patterns, the fact remains that heat is contributing to damaging storms. With the possibility of stronger storms, what does the future of power infrastructure look like? 

Steffany Smith, Communications and Engagement Director for I&M, explains the benefits of what the company calls “blue sky days.” One blue sky day, or days with quiet weather, technicians are working to repair and improve old infrastructure to prepare for future storm events. 

Now is the time to rebuild and recover to combat the impacts of severe weather.
