Suspect arrested on bench warrant for felony strangulation, battery, and resisting

Robert Morgan

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department reports on Thursday at 9:50 a.m. the Warrants Team located 50-year-old Robert Morgan, wanted on a Bench Warrant, in the 700 block of S. Main Street in South Bend.

The South Bend Police Department assisted with the arrest and Morgan was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail.

Morgan was wanted on a Bench Warrant for Felony Strangulation, two counts of Felony Battery Against a Public Official, Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury, and Resisting Law Enforcement.

Morgan's charges stem from an incident occurring on March 4.

Court documents state SBPD officers responded to the 2500 block of East Pleasant Street for reports of an assault that day.

When police arrived, the victim and a witness directed them to an apartment inside.

When the caller let police into the apartment, he told the suspect, Morgan, was hiding in the back of the apartment.

Officers then found Morgan had locked himself in the back room of the apartment.

The report states officers' attempts to persuade him to leave failed, and Morgan locked and barricaded the door.

When the officers forced the door open and entered the room, Morgan threw a chair at the two officers, striking them, before taking a fighting stance and throwing punches at them, documents state.

The officers then knocked Morgan down and tried to restrain him, but he continued to kick and flail. Police say it took five officers to handcuff the man.

The victim and witnesses explained they were staying at the apartment with Morgan and his girlfriend.

The three men told police earlier that day Morgan came home agitated, ranting about a devil in the apartment and who the "man" of the apartment was.

The men told police Morgan, unprovoked, then targeted the victim, hitting him in the face, straddling him, and wrapping both hands around his throat until he lost consciousness.

Police officers say they saw dried blood from victim's nose and swelling around his left eye.

During the assault, the witnesses called police while Morgan's girlfriend attempted to calm him down.

Morgan then hit her in the face, and she fled the apartment before police arrived.

At the time of this offense, police say Morgan was on pretrial release for prior, unrelated conduct.

In that case, he failed to appear twice and there was an active bench warrant for his arrest at the time of this offense.
