St. Joseph County police warn of phone scams

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department reports scammers are currently calling residents and telling them they have a warrant and in some cases are using real names of county deputies.

Police say the scammers are telling residents they will go to jail unless they meet and give them cash or go to the store, get a gift card, and give them the number on the back so they can access the funds.

County authorities say warrants never come through the sheriff, they are issued and managed through the courts.

Police will never call you, instead if you have a warrant, they'll knock on your front door.

Warrants will never come through the mail, and the bond amount associated with the warrant will never change.

Police say they will never accept cash, gift cards, or Bitcoin, or meet you at a random location.

If you think you are getting scammed, you're asked to call the SJCPD at 574-245-6500 to report it.
