SSA protesters met with counter protest in Niles

NILES, Mich. -- Protesters with the Michigan Alliance for Retired Americans gathered outside Fifth District Congressman Tim Walberg's Niles office on Monday to share their opinions on recent cuts by DOGE within the Social Security Administration.

Protests have been happening outside Congressman Walberg's office for weeks, but Monday was the first time that counter protesters made an appearance.

Those counter protesters referred to themselves as "prayer warriors" and Republicans who wanted to show their support for elected officials at the local and national level.

Counter protesters arrived a half-hour before the Alliance-led protest began and both groups dispersed after about an hour.

Protesters carried signs with blank spaces that could be filled-in by marker, where people could write the number of years that they worked and contributed to social security.

Counter protesters claim that the cuts being made will help eliminate fraud within the SSA, while the opposing side worries that a lower-staffed administration won't be able to assist as many social security recipients.

ABC57 News reached out to Congressman Walberg's Niles office and were forwarded to his D.C. office staff but received no response or statement regarding the protest.
