Juvenile detained as suspect in Michigan City double homicide
LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. — The Michigan City Police Department (MCPD) is investigating a double homicide that was discovered early Sun. morning in Michigan City after a crash in LaPorte led officers to the deceased.
According to a press release from MCPD, at 1:11 a.m., the LaPorte County Regional Dispatch Center got a 911 call about a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Johnson Road and County Road West 300 North in LaPorte.
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office dispatched deputies to the scene. LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to ABC57 that upon arrival, the deputies located a male juvenile who had crashed into a tree.
A Michigan City Police Officer explained to ABC57 as the LaPorte County deputies investigated the crash, they learned the juvenile was a suspect to a double homicide at a residence in the 100 block of Schofield Court in Michigan City.
Those LaPorte County deputies shared that information with MCPD, who dispatched officers from Uniform Patrol Shift 3 to the Michigan City residence at 1:30 a.m. for a welfare check.
Once inside, officers located two adults deceased from foul play. At that point, detectives from the MCPD Investigative Division were called to the scene, who took over the investigation and are currently conducting a double homicide investigation based on the evidence at the scene.
All identities, including the juvenile and two deceased individuals, are not being shared as of yet, but police did say this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community.
The juvenile was detained and MCPD told ABC57 a probable cause affidavit and charging information were signed by the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office on Mon.
Those documents are waiting to be reviewed by a judge. Once they are reviewed, MCPD said they plan to send out updated information.
MCPD is asking anyone who may be a witness, has more information, or surveillance or cell phone video, to reach out to the lead investigator: Detective Brock Moore at (219) 874-3221 or email at [email protected].
