Squatter siblings arrested for felony Burglary at property with previously reported issues
La Porte County Jail: Anna Lee, Nicholas A. Lee TRAIL CREEK, Ind. -- A brother and sister are facing Burglary charges after police located them squatting in a home in the 2900 block of E. Michigan Boulevard in Trail Creek on the evening of Oct. 3.
The duo, 38-year-old Nicholas Lee and 40-year-old Anna Lee, are each charged with Burglary of a Dwelling, a Level 4 Felony.
Both had their initial hearing and have jury trials scheduled for March 8, 2027.
According to court documents, officers with the Trial Creek Police Department conducted a random search for squatters on Oct. 3 at the home on E. Michigan Boulevard at around 5:02 p.m.
Police say they'd previously taken a burglary report at this home. Authorities say this visit was random to ensure no subjects were at the property.
The previous report documented that wiring had been cut and removed and was being cleaned to sell the scrap copper.
Officers arrived and observed a second-floor window was open. Police noted they knew that window was for a bathroom due to a previous visit, during which the officer had closed it.
Police then noticed movement in the home. Officers then yelled for the subject to exit the home, at which point a woman, later identified as Anna, looked out the window before fleeing somewhere else in the house.
A perimeter was then made around the home. An officer then gave announcements that a police K9 was in use and anyone inside needed to exit. After the final announcement, Anna's voice was heard inside. Anna complied and exited before being taken into custody.
Anna initially told police no one else was inside.
Police and the K9 then entered, locating a man, later identified as Nicholas, in the home's upper level.
Authorities say Anna informed them that Nicholas was her brother and they'd been staying there for a week. She also denied taking any property or stripping wires from the house.
Anna told police there had been other people there with them before, a man and woman, although she didn't know their names. Anna also told officers she was not aware of a stove that was previously reported as stolen.
When speaking with police, Nicholas corroborated Anna's story and said he also had no knowledge of the stolen stove.
Upon re-entering the home, police say they located a OnePay debit card with the name of Nicholas Lee in one room on the lower level which also had bare wire and tools in it, which law enforcement says indicates the two were likely involved with removal and stripping of the wire.
Authorities also found men and women's clothes and personal effects strewn throughout the property.
Police say there was a lot of bare wire, and wire sheathing throughout the home.
The report states it appeared as if they were using the living room on the main level as a wire stripping station.
Nicholas and Anna were taken to the La Porte County Jail.
