South Bend's urban garden market kicks off summer season Saturday
SOUTH BEND — South Bend's Urban Garden Market kicked off its summer season Saturday in a new location. The market is now on the city's west side near Lincolnway West and Eclipse Place.
Vendors will be selling fresh fruits, vegetables and grans every Saturday at the St. Joseph Minority Health Coalition.
"Where the market is located is considered a food desert, which means there's no grocery store within a reasonable distance to get fresh fruits and vegetables," said St. Joseph Minority Health Coalition executive director Karl Nichols. "The only thing that's available are corner stores, which don't provide fresh fruits and vegetables needed in your daily diet."
The market will accept EBT cards in the following weeks in hopes of helping low-income families obtain easier access to healthy foods.
