South Bend Police investigating string of car thefts targeting Kia, Hyundai

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Police Department is investigating a string of thefts in the area targeting certain types of vehicles.

In July, officers responded to several reports of thefts or attempted thefts of newer-model Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

Police said the thefts may be motivated by posts on social media.

According to investigators, a video is circulating online that demonstrates how the vehicles can be stolen without a key.

Regardless of your vehicle's brand, police suggest the following to avoid theft:

  • Use a steering wheel locking device
  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Keep doors locked at all times
  • Keep personal belongings out of plain view
  • Report any suspicious activity to the South Bend Police Department

The Property Crimes Unit continues to investigate these incidents.
