South Bend mayor patches potholes and discusses future road improvements

ABC 57

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Mayor James Mueller took to the city's streets Tuesday morning alongside road workers and Public Works Director Eric Horvath to help patch potholes.

Mueller stated the city's crews filled over 37,000 potholes in 2024.

Mueller said in part, "So, there is good news that our streets are getting into better condition, but nevertheless, there's only so much we can do when Mother Nature throws these cold, thaw, freeze, thaw cycles. So that's what we're doing here today. We can only do a cold patch in this weather, and then we'll come back later in the year, when the asphalt plant opens up next month, to do a more stable patch. So, we're trying to make sure these streets stay drivable throughout this season and look forward to paving season beginning in short order."

Mueller also added there's been a slight decrease in potholes as the city has increased its paving program.
