South Bend man charged with fleeing scene of car crash with a child
St. Joseph County Jail SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A South Bend man faces multiple charges after allegedly leaving the scene of a crash with a child.
Daron Breveard is charged with felony Leaving the Scene of an Accident, as well as five misdemeanors connected to either leaving the scene of an accident or reckless driving.
The crash happened on or about October 25. Officers were reportedly dispatched to the intersection of Washington Street and Walnut Street in South Bend for a reported crash. Officials say officers found a car had crashed into a fence and stopped moving by the side of a house.
Officials say one person who was in the car remained on the scene; they reportedly suffered major leg pain. They reportedly told officers they were in the vehicle, which Breveard was driving. They also told officers Breveard left the scene of the crash carrying a child that was also in the vehicle.
Breveard reportedly went to Memorial Hospital, where he allegedly lied to hospital staff about how the child was injured. Documents allege Breveard allegedly told officers the car had bad tires, and that he was unable to stop it. He also reportedly said he left the scene to seek assistance for the child and called "his people" to pick him up. Breveard also allegedly said he never obtained a driver's license.
Officials say the child had a swollen lip and forehead but was otherwise "doing okay."
His initial hearing is set for November 10.
