SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Leaf pickup season is set to begin in South Bend next week with crews taking to neighborhood streets Monday (Oct. 28) morning.

"Residents do not have to call to request a pickup," city officials said. "All dates on the schedule are weather permitting and subject to change."

Residents can see the most up-to-date pick-up schedule as well track leaf pickup in real-time using the city’s Leaf Pickup Tracker.

The online map displays the status of different zones and leaf pickup on individual streets. Residents can enter their address or zoom in to find their location.

Leaf pickup will go from Oct. 28 through the end of the year as weather allows.

"Crews will collect all leaves in one zone before beginning in the next," city officials said. "Leaf pickup in a particular zone can sometimes take several days before moving to the next zone."

Below are guidelines that residents are asked to follow for the Leaf Pickup Program:

  • Leaves should be raked to the tree lawn area, NOT into the street, by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled set out date.
  • Leaves should be free of sticks, trash and other debris or they will not be picked up.
  • Cars should not be parked on top or in front of leaf piles along curb lines, as this hampers leaf collection.
  • Leaf burning is prohibited and is a violation of City ordinance.

"Residents participating in the city’s Yard Waste program can also put leaves in yard waste bins," city officials said. "The program offers weekly collection and runs through Friday, Nov. 29."

Residents can call 311 with any questions.
