South Bend breaks ground on $48 million dollar Four Winds Field expansion
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Cubs wrapped up their season Sunday on the road, while back at home, work is already underway on the largest investment in the stadium’s history.
Decades of memories made on the corner of South Street at ball games, concerts, and beyond would have never been possible without what was once Coveleski Stadium.
But now, the next generation will get to enjoy a reimagined Four Winds Field.
"What is to come is going to blow everyone's mind,” said Andrew Berlin the Owner and Chairman of the South Bend Cubs.
Renderings show anticipated expanded seating, suites, and other amenities that hope to multiply the park’s capacity and income.
"The number of visitors it attracts from all across the region has a really significant economic impact, and we're gonna double down on that by this investment,” said Jeff Rea the President and CEO of the South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Local leaders and the team’s owner, Andrew Berlin, gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday.
South Bend Mayor, James Mueller, said the investment’s impact is much bigger than baseball.
"Even beyond the ballpark all of the opportunities the development the investment that's going on near nearby that's what's really exciting,” said Mueller.
Adding that the Cubs have been a catalyst for other projects coming to the once desolate neighborhood, including Union Station Renovations and the new Diamond View Apartment complex, which will bring affordable housing options right across the street.
"Really in a few short years we're going to see a complete transformation of this part of town,” said Mueller.
The project is expected to be completed over the next two off seasons, but fans can expect to see a lot of the work done before opening day 2025.
