SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Over the years, several former South Bend Cubs have been called up to the big league, from pitcher Nico Hoerner to pitcher Justin Steele, and even one of the biggest names in Major League Baseball, Gold Glove left fielder Ian Happ.
The most recent to join the 40-man roster, former Four Winds Field favorite, 3rd baseman Matt Shaw.
The rookie with high expectations was Chicago's first round pick, the 13th overall selection of the 2023 MLB Draft.
Shaw's time in the Bend was short but sweet, in just 20 games he had a .393 batting average with 33 hits, 18 RBI's, and four homeruns, then making his big debut for the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo March 18.
ABC57 Kickoff Host Allison Hayes spoke exclusively with Shaw at Wrigley Field yesterday, as he reflected on his time with the South Bend Cubs.
