Senator Todd Young visits Elkhart County's Indiana Manufacturing housing Summit

ELKHART, Ind. -- Senator Todd Young was at the Indiana Manufacturing Housing Summit speaking on wanting more affordable housing and mentioning that Elkhart County is the epicenter of the manufactured housing industry.

"I happen to have led on this issue for a number of years, and I know it's really important to Hoosiers as we think about housing affordability," said Senator Young.

The Neighborhood Homes Investment Act is designed to unlock private investments so they can rehabilitate and improve houses and entire neighborhoods during hard times, "It is a financial instrument that I've created through my legislation in Washington that we think is going to rejuvenate a lot of communities that are rural or urban in nature, and bring those distressed houses back onto the tax roll, improve the general climate of these neighborhoods, and make these places suitable for living, for raising your family, etc.," said Senator Young.

During the seminar they also mentioned that manufactured homes are more affordable, "manufactured homes are more affordable than the average cost of a new home which is significantly higher," said Ron Breymier, the Executive Director of the Indiana Manufactured Housing Association and RV Indiana Council.

Breymier also said zoning is a big problem causing people to buy homes at a later age, "we see people that were buying homes when they're in their late 20s; now they're buying homes when they're in their 40s."

Senator Young also took some time to talk about the new jobs and learning opportunities data centers will create for future generations, " That starts at a very young age, certainly extends through our K through 12 system, and as we invest in higher education, whether it's a community college or a trade college or even a college or university, we need to make sure that our investments are targeted towards those programs that really prepare people for this economy of the future."
