Saint Mary's College STUNT team tumbles their way to nationals
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- In their inaugural season, the Belles made history as the first NCAA Division III college or university in the state of Indiana to add STUNT as a varsity sport.
Now, they are adding more to the history books by earning a spot to nationals.
"We're very excited to be going in our first year, we'll be one of the only first year programs at nationals. We're super excited to represent for first year programs, but it means a lot to us to have all come together this year, and to be able to have worked so hard for so long, and to be able to pull off this feat, which is going to nationals," Saint Mary's College Head STUNT Coach Jillian Humphrey said.
Tuesday morning saw the campus come together to send the team off in style with cheers, hugs and even a prayer.
Saint Mary's was named the fourth seed in the Division III Championship by STUNT the Sport. They will face Concordia Chicago in the opening round Thursday morning.
Humphrey says this season was filled with growth, adversity and many accomplishments, which she calls a celebration in itself.
"It seems like it went really fast. It's a very fast year for myself and the ladies, but we're just very excited about everything that we've accomplished. We've been through injuries; we've been through some illnesses. We currently have a roster size of 16-17, so for us to be a smaller roster and to still be able to on top of injuries, on top of illnesses, be able to still stay competitive. That's pretty huge," Humphrey said.
