Restoration project underway at Indiana Dunes National Park

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. – A major restoration project is ongoing at Indiana Dunes National Park which started on September 16th. The goal is to remove 25 structures and roadbeds and return them to original ground conditions.

With $1.3 million to work with under the contract, the project seeks to remove buildings, walkways, pavement, walls, septic tanks, and water wells that have all fallen out of use. This includes the removal of hazardous materials.

Asphalt that is removed will be backfilled with sand or other similar material that fits the area.

Work locations include 13 sites in Gary, five in Michigan City, four in Chesterton, two in Beverly Shores, and one in Porter.

The project is aiming to be finished by the end of April, 2021.
