SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- For the first time in five years, a red panda cub has been born at the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend.

Zoo officials announced the cub, currently known as "Big Red," was born to mother Raya and father EJ on June 13. Raya reportedly gave birth to five cubs; zoo officials say this is an unusually large litter for red pandas, which led to them all being very small. Big Red is the only remaining cub.

He is currently being hand-reared by zoo staff, as they say Raya would not be able to care for her cubs independently. Zoo officials say, though he is small for his age, Big Red appears to be healthy and growing normally.

Raya, born in 2021, was the last red panda born at Potawatomi Zoo.
