LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A 30-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop on Aug. 6, which ended with him nearly drowning following a crash into murky waters.

The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports deputies on patrol in Terrace Acres Mobile Home Park were exiting onto US 20 around 4:49 p.m. when they observed an SUV traveling west.

The SUV was recognized as being associated with Jacob A. Gilmore, a man wanted by the sheriff's office for Invasion of Privacy, Level 6 Felony. and Domestic Battery, a Class A Misdemeanor.

The deputies then tailed the SUV at which point the duo observed a traffic violation before attempting a traffic stop near US 20 and County Line Road.

The report states the SUV stopped but while one of the deputies exited the patrol car, the SUV suddenly accelerated, traveling south on County Line Road. A pursuit ensued.

During the chase, one of the deputies was able to identify the driver as Gilmore via the SUV's driver’s side mirror.

The chase continued through Coolspring, New Durham, Scipio, Clinton, Cass, and Dewey Townships. 

Gilmore then drove onto Horseshoe Bend Road before crashing into a waterway.

The SUV became partially submerged.

Deputies say Gilmore ignored their instructions and began to light and smoke a glass pipe before exiting the SUV.

The report states Gilmore began swimming away from the deputies before he went underwater. Deputies entered the water while Gilmore failed to resurface.

A deputy then found Gilmore before bringing him to shore where he was given medical attention and regained consciousness.

Gilmore again tried to flee on foot after being taken into custody. Gilmore was then taken to a hospital for treatment.

Gilmore is charged with Resisting Law Enforcement, a Level 5 Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, a Level 6 Felony, Possession of Cocaine/Narcotic Drug, a Level 6 Felony, Public Administration-Escape, a Level 6 Felony, Criminal Recklessness, a Class A Misdemeanor, Aggressive Driving, a Class A Misdemeanor, Possession of Paraphernalia, a Class C Misdemeanor, two counts of Operating While Intoxicated, as Class C Misdemeanors, and his original arrest warrant.
