UPDATE: Motorcyclist suffers life-threatening injuries in crash at Michigan Street and Fairview Avenue, FACT investigating

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- UPDATE: The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office confirms on Wednesday, June 19, at around 4:46 p.m., officers responded to a crash involving a delivery truck and a motorcycle at Michigan Street and West Fairview Avenue in South Bend.

Officers arrived and found that the motorcyclist, identified as 57-year-old Roy T. Ritchie of South Bend was critically injured.

The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) was then activated per protocol.

Authorities' initial reports indicate the delivery van driver, identified as 49-year-old Jason Dean Born of Mishawaka, was attempting to make a northbound turn onto Michigan Street from West Fairview Avenue when he turned into the path of Ritchie.

Born was uninjured and cooperative with authorities. 

The preliminary investigation did not show signs of impairment.

Ritchie was taken to the hospital for life threatening head injuries.

ORIGINAL STORY: A crash has occurred near South Michigan Street and West Fairview Avenue.

The South Bend Police Department is advising that people avoid the area of Michigan Street and West Fairview Avenue as officers respond to a crash that occurred.

The crash involved a motorcycle and a vehicle and SBPD says that there has been at least one serious injury.

Michigan Street from East Irvington Avenue to East Victoria Street was closed down.

St. Joseph County FACT has taken the lead in the investigation.
