VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- A wanted 58-year-old fugitive was suspected to be staying in the 28000 block of C.R. 388 and after authorities obtained a probable cause to search the property, the fugitive detonated a pipe bomb.
Authorities then requested assistance from the Van Buren County SWAT team around 11 a.m. on July 4.
Verbal negotiations began urging a peaceful surrender, but the response was the suspects intent to kill all officers on scene.
SWAT then deployed tear gas into the camper of the fugitive.
Upon exiting the camper, the fugitive detonated a second pipe bomb.
As the fugitive stood in the doorway, a SWAT officer hit the suspect twice with a less-lethal shotgun.
The suspect eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.
No officers were injured during the incident and the fugitive was transported to a hospital for injuries.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Bomb Squad responded to the scene following the arrest and discovered a third pipe bomb, which was destroyed.
Michigan State Police Crime Lab was also called to the scene to assist with processing evidence.
