Periodic closures to cause traffic delays on U.S. 20

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) reports that there will be periodic 20 minute closures of U.S. 20 just west of the South Bend International Airport.

The closures will cover the area between Pine Road and west Linwood Boulevard.

These closures will begin on Wednesday, July 29th and continue through Wednesday, August 8th.

It will be in both the eastbound and westbound lanes and will continue periodically each weekday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The closures are necessary for the safety of drivers as crews remove nearly two dozen pieces of bridge beams for the U.S. 31/U.S. 20 Bypass bridge spanning over U.S. 20/Lincoln Way.

Because the beams are so large, crews will shore up the center of the bridge, cut each of the 11 overhead beams in half, and then remove them in two pieces.

To avoid lengthy delays, INDOT is urging drivers to avoid this area as much as possible.

Drivers can monitor road closures and traffic alerts at any time via the INDOT Northwest District social media channels: www.Facebook.com/INDOTNorthwest or Twitter @INDOTNorthwest. You can also visit http://www.trafficwise.in.gov for INDOT’s TrafficWise Traveler Information Service.
