Passenger in vehicle shot by man in SUV

ELKHART, Ind. -- A woman in a vehicle was shot by a person in a dark SUV in the area of Lusher Avenue and Prairie Street early Sunday morning, according to Elkhart Police.

At 2:48 a.m. an officer responded to the 100 block of E. Lusher Avenue for reports of gunfire.

A caller told police the shooter was traveling toward Main Street and Lusher in a dark colored SUV and the victim was in a vehicle as well, reports said.

While searching for the vehicles, dispatch told officers a woman with a gunshot wound had arrived at the hospital.

The officer went to the hospital and spoke with the victim.

She said she was in the passenger seat of a vehicle in the area of Lusher Avenue and Prairie Street when a man in a black SUV fired at her vehicle.

The victim was treated for a non-life-threatening injury to the upper torso.

The case remains under investigation.
