CROWN POINT, Ind. -- One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash on I-65 late Saturday night.
On May 16 around 11:15 p.m. Indiana State Police troopers located a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban blocking the center and right lanes about one mile south of the Crown Point exit and a red 2016 Dodge minivan in a ditch.
A preliminary investigation indicated the minivan was following another vehicle experiencing mechanical issues at very low speeds on the right lane.
Police say the driver of the Chevrolet didn't realize how slowly the minivan was traveling and swerved left attempting to avoid it, but ultimately struck the left read side of the minivan causing it to leave the roadway.
The minivan was occupied by seven adults but only had the two front seats installed.
The five other passengers were seated on boxes of mangos and weren't properly fastened.
All five passengers were transported to local hospitals.
One passenger, 25-year-old Navya Gadusu later died at Franciscan Health Crown Point.
The current condition of the Chevrolet driver is unknown.
