Notre Dame Men's Basketball out to a 4-0 start to the season
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Sophomore guard Markus Burton lead all players with 29 points and nine rebounds in a 75-58 win against North Dakota.
To no surprise, Burton remains the focal point of the offense for the Irish. His 29 points were one point shy of his career high. He also added nine rebounds, tying his career high and just one short of earning his first career double double.
"Just staying patient, reading the game, allowing my teammates to help me be become a better player," Burton said.
The Irish shot over 50% from the field and kept the lead for 36+ minutes.
But was it enough?
"We were okay in what we did, but like, Tuesday's a crazy class day, so we didn't have shoot around, right? So, I don't get to see them until 3:30 and then warmups and everything else. So, like, that can't be an excuse. Like you've played college basketball. You know the effort level, you know the focus level that needs to be there, whether you're playing North Dakota, whether you're playing Nebraska, like whoever it is, you have to prepare the right way," Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry said.
Shrewsberry not exactly satisfied with the way Notre Dame won. Regardless of how his team played.
"Obviously, we got a lot of great players. So obviously, just feeding off them and playing, playing with them, and trusting the process, trusting my coaching staff, and just allowing the game to come to me," Burton added.
The Irish even had a spark off the bench from J.R. Konieczny with 12 points and Julian Roper with five steals.
"You see it all the time at different teams, anybody could have a day, and I know I could contribute in multiple, multiple ways. So whenever I get out there, I just pride myself on doing something to help us win," Roper added.
"I'm taking the blame on this. I can't let my foot off the gas, right? So now I know, right now, I know. I know how we're going to prepare tomorrow. We're going to watch this film, and I know how we're going to prepare for Elon. I know what we're going to do on Thursday leading into Friday. I know what we're going to do at shootaround on Friday. Like I ain't worried about Friday. These boys going to play like they hair is on fire on Friday," Shrewsberry said.
