ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department responded to a local school for a report of a suspicious person with a firearm around 8:04 a.m. on Thursday morning.
When the officers arrived at Northside Middle School (300 Lawrence Street) they learned that a man was allegedly walking a family member to school when school security approached him on the sidewalk by the front doors.
"Security reported telling the male subject that he was not allowed to have a firearm on school property and it is a felony to do so," Elkhart police said. "The male subject left the school and officers made contact with the male subject near Main St. and Floyd St."
When they spoke with the man, officers took possession of the firearm for evidence. He was not arrested but was told that a case would be forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office.
