LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. - A meeting with the New Prairie United School Corporation Monday night saw a continued discussion over six potentially controversial books in the middle school's library.
The discussion stemmed from a woman coming forward to challenge the books, which are said to have possible sexual and gender identity issues. The books on the docket included The Infinite Moment of Us, Tilt, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Empire of Storms, Kingdom of Ash, and Re-Thinking Normal.
As part of the woman's challenge, a committee was formed to read each book and decide whether the books stayed at the middle school, moved up to the high school, or removed. At a previous meeting, the committee ultimately decided the books were okay to keep on the middle school's shelves. The woman, in turn, appealed the committee's decision.
Monday night's meeting was held to get the school corporation's input on the issue. Leaders sided with the committee, agreeing that the books could stay at the middle school.
