New health app shows you where the flu is

A new app hitting digital shelves can help you see where illnesses are in your community based off of social media posts.

According to MLive, Sickweather uses a “patent-pending algorithm” to pull information from social media posts and create a real-time map.

The software identifies key words and phrases like, "I can't stop coughing."

The map shows where people are suffering from a cold, the flu, strep throat and more.

MLive reports the app will also predict 15 weeks in advance using different learning models.

The app’s CEO Graham Dodge said he pushed the app during the government shutdown because CDC reports could have been delayed.
