SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A high-speed chase ended in downtown South Bend Wednesday night after a suspect crashed his car and then ran from police. He was then found dead along the St. Joseph River.
The suspect has not yet been identified.
Sergeant Ted Bohner of the Indiana State Police said the pursuit began around 8:30 p.m. in Niles at the Green Stem dispensary. Police tried to stop the suspect for a traffic violation and then the chase began.
Several police agencies from Michigan and Indiana became involved as police pursued the suspect's vehicle down State Highway 933 toward South Bend.
According to ISP, the suspect hit a South Bend Police vehicle near Memorial Hospital and McDonald's before jumping out of his own vehicle and running toward the river.
At that point, shots were fired.
Police searched for the suspect and ultimately found him dead at the bottom of an embankment.
According to Sergeant Bohner, a woman was in the vehicle with the suspect during the chase. She was not charged in the incident.
