Multi-agency response to passenger in distress

ABC 57

ELKHART, Ind. -- On Tuesday, April 29 at 11:00 a.m., members of the Baugo Township Fire Department were performing routine maintenance outside of the station in Elkhart. They observed a vehicle stopping abruptly in the middle of the road in front of the station. A female passenger was seen shouting for help and tried to exit the vehicle. The male driver of the vehicle restrained her and drove off with the passenger door still open.

A firefighter immediately notified the rest of the crew which prompted a pursuit. Two members of the fire department pursued the vehicle on foot to maintain visual contact. The Battalion Chief contacted dispatch and law enforcement via radio. Additional personnel followed the vehicle via ambulance.

The vehicle was seen driving erratically and leaving the roadway, passing other vehicles, and entering oncoming traffic. Ladder 191 and Medic 121 kept close distance providing real-time updates on the vehicle's location.

A law enforcement officer at a nearby intersection distracted the suspect by activating the emergency lights. The female passenger in the vehicle escaped. The fire department responded to the female passenger and took her to a safe area, where she received medical attention before being released. It is believed the male driver was apprehended shortly after by law enforcement.

The law enforcement departments that helped assist Baugo Township Fire Department were Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, Elkhart City Police Department, Baugo Community School Police Department, and Indiana State Police.
