CASS COUNTY, Mich. - Michigan State Police say an Elkhart man is in custody after a man was found stabbed to death in Cass County.
Investigators say someone called 911 around 8:20 p.m. Monday about the stabbing on the 16000 block of State Line Road in Mason Township.
When troopers arrived they found Alan Craigo, 59, who had been stabbed several times.
Troopers say the suspect is a 32-year-old Joseph Craigo, Alan's son.
Troopers say an argument between the two led to the attack. Investigators say the suspect left the home, then came back.
"At this time we are not going to release that information. I do know why he left the scene but he had told me during the interview he felt it was self-defense and then he returned back to the scene. He also called 911 and waited for the police to arrive. The spouse called 911 first and then he did make a call a few minutes later to central, to dispatch," said Detective Sgt. Fabian Suarez of the Michigan State Police Niles post.
Joseph Craigo appeared in court Tuesday. He was charged with one count of open murder, one count of carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, assault with a dangerous weapon and interfering with electronic communications.
The autopsy on Alan Craigo is scheduled Tuesday morning in Kalamazoo.
