ST JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. --Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood's son, Joseph Wood, was arrested on Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) charges in connection with a crash in the 900 block of Frances Street in South Bend over the weekend.

According to the South Bend Police Department, the crash occurred at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, when one vehicle hit two parked cars and landed on its side.

Wood was checked at the hospital for minor injuries and then was booked in the St. Joseph County jail.

He has since been released.

Mayor Dave Wood released a statement on Sunday, September 24 at 7:43 p.m. stating his disappointment in the accident and that he's striving to get his son the help he needs.

"We know that Joseph is dealing with some mental health issues, and we are committed to getting him the help and resources he needs." -Mayor Dave Wood

Mayor Wood also thanks the South Bend Police Department and the staff at the St. Joseph County Jail-operated by the St. Joseph County Sherrif's Department for their professional response and for operating "by the book."

This arrest follows another incident in October of 2022 where Wood was pulled over for driving too fast in Mishawaka.

The officer, as shown from body camera footage obtained by ABC57, suspected Wood of having signs of intoxication, but officers did not give him a field sobriety test or arrest him.
