NOW: Michigan Republican candidates in the Gubernatorial race face-off

MICHIGAN -- On Wednesday, the Republican candidates running in the primary of the upcoming Governor's race faced off in their first of two televised debates; the second scheduled for Thursday, July 9.

The candidates, former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, U.S. Rep. John James, and businessman Perry Johnson, are vying for the Republican slot in the November elections. Topics in the debate included data centers, gas prices, and whether or not a candidate would stand up to President Trump, if necessary.

The primary elections are scheduled for August 4, and the GOP winner will be up against the winner of the Democratic primary. That race currently consists of two candidates: Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer cannot run again to due to term limits.

Current poll numbers have John James leading the primary race by ten points. James is also the candidate backed by President Trump.

Absentee ballots for the primary are available now. Early in-person voting begins everywhere Saturday, July 25 (though some municipalities will make early voting available earlier) and ends Sunday, Aug. 2. Voters can vote in-person at their polling location Tuesday, Aug. 4. The general election will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
