Michigan man killed in crash on Indiana Toll Road

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind.—A Michigan man was killed in a crash over the weekend on the Indiana Toll Road, according to Indiana State Police.

Around 6:45 p.m. on December 5, Indiana State Police were called to rollover crash involving one semi-truck on the Indiana Toll Road near the 151-mile marker in Steuben County.

Troopers found that a semi-truck pulling a bulk liquid tanker trailer rolled over and went down in the center of the median.

The semi-truck’s driver, Stephen Robert Downs, 61, of Colon, Michigan, died at the scene, according to Indiana State Police.

About 4,000 gallons of milk along with about 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled as a result of the crash and required that both eastbound and westbound lanes of the Toll Road remain closed for about two hours.

Alcohol use was not suspected in the crash and police do not know why the semi-truck ran off the edge of the road, according to state police.

The crash remains under investigation.
