According to dispatch, the call came in at 8:32 p.m. regarding a shooting on Milton Avenue and St. Joseph Street approximately four blocks away from Riley High School.
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Commander Tim Corbett says it's remarkable the children were not hurt.
"Only by the grace of God are those kids alive," Corbett said. "This is the type of barbaric, animalistic things that we are dealing with everyday."
Investigators are not releasing the man's name until all family are notified.
An autopsy on the victim will be held in Fort Wayne.
