Memorial walk for Elkhart teen killed in police involved shooting
ELKHART, Ind. -- An emotional day in Elkhart as friends and family of 17-year-old Bryan Ramirez Gomez organized a silent walk as they continue to demand accountability from local law enforcement. Ramirez Gomez was shot and killed by police officers early Sunday morning in Elkhart.
Raw emotion. A community looking for answers. On a sunny day in Elkhart, countless tears were shed.
Their silence was deafening. With heavy hearts, and very few dry eyes, friends, family members, and many who knew Bryan Ramirez Gomez walked from his memorial at High Dive Pavilion to Saint Vincent De Paul Church, where Ramirez Gomez's memorial service took place. There was an abundance of homemade signs and looks of sorrow and hurt.
It’s been four days since the shooting of Ramirez Gomez, and those who are mourning him are growing more frustrated by the day with a lack of answers. One person who spoke before the walk placed an emphasis on silence but made it clear that the quiet times won't be for much longer.
"There will be a time and a place for a protest where we can raise our voices. I know there's a lot of emotions we are all feeling right now, but right now, we're going to use the power of silence and the visual representation of who we are and march through the streets of Elkhart to show that we're not going to stay silent and we're not going to stop showing up until we get justice for Bryan.”
One member of Bryan’s family tells ABC57 that he and the rest of his family do not plan on doing interviews until state police take over this investigation.
