Man struck and injured in Toll Road crash
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Last evening the Indiana State Troopers responded to a crash on the Indiana Toll Road where a man was struck while he was outside his vehicle that spun out and crashed.
At approximately 7:00p.m. a black Ford SUV was traveling eastbound on the Indiana Toll Road when it spun out and crashed near the 94-mile marker. This is approximately two miles east of the Elkhart exit.
The Ford SUV stopped facing south and blocking the eastbound lanes, when the driver a 19-year-old man from Frankfort, IL got out of the SUV. While standing on the driver’s side of the SUV it was struck in the passenger side by a white 2019 Volvo semi.
This collision caused the SUV to collide with the driver standing outside, throwing him into a ditch on the south side of the road.
The driver of the Ford SUV was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with serious injuries. The driver of the Volvo, a 64-year-old man from Philadelphia was not injured.
Eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road reopened at approximately 8:20 p.m. after the crash investigation and vehicles were removed. Roads were slick at the time of the crash due to the falling snow.
