Man charged with drunk crash in La Porte County four months after OWI conviction, three years after another

La Porte County Jail

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A man with a history of OWI convictions is facing a new set of charges.

Brandon Young is charged with felony Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated with prior conviction, as well as Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated misdemeanors.

The incident happened July 27. First responders were dispatched to the area of Locust Drive in Walkerton for a single vehicle crash. A report from investigators noted that a National Weather Service tornado warning was in effect. One officer says he was concerned with low visibility and potential hydroplaning.

Investigators say that evidence at the scene appeared to show that Young had swerved off the road for an unknown reason, causing the rear passenger side of his pickup truck to hit a tree stump. They say it appears he tried to correct the action, only to cross the road and hit a tree with the rear driver's side of his truck.

Documents allege that Young displayed multiple signs of being unfit to drive at the scene; he allegedly told officers he had a few beers, and that he believed he should not have been on the road.

Young allegedly denied blood alcohol tests at the scene. A breath sample provided to jail staff showed a concentration of 0.292 BrAC.

Documents show Young had a previous OWI conviction in March 2026. He was sentenced to time served after a year in jail.

He was also convicted of OWI in 2023.
