St. Joseph County Jail: Randy Boocher SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A 60-year-old man is facing several charges after allegedly trying to kidnap a girl from her front yard on July 10.
The suspect, Randy Boocher, is charged with Kidnapping where victim is less than 14 years of age, a Level 5 Felony, Attempted Kidnapping where victim is less than 14 years of age, a Level 5 Felony, and Possession of Marijuana, a Misdemeanor.
Boocher's initial court hearing has yet to be scheduled.
According to the probable cause affidavit, South Bend police officers responded to the 200 block of E. Fairview Avenue regarding a reported kidnapping.
The mother of the victim, a 6-year-old girl, told police her daughter was outside playing when she suddenly heard her start yelling, "Mommy!"
The mother said she then saw a white man had the victim in a "bear hug" and was starting to walk down the alley, carrying her.
The victim's mom then came up behind the man, later identified as Boocher, and pushed him over, causing him to fall while still holding the girl.
The mother said she then grabbed hold of the victim and told Boocher he needed to leave. The victim's mother also stated Boocher was intoxicated and waved a broken liquor bottle at her.
The mother said Bocher told her, "I just got out of jail," before she and other neighbors began following him while calling the police. The victim's mother told police she did hit and push Boocher to get him away from the victim.
The victim told police Bocher grabbed her from behind and said, "I'm going to take you away." She said Boocher kept saying this to her while she yelled for her mom.
The victim and her mother both stated they didn't know Boocher. Boocher was pointed out to officers and he was detained.
Boocher was subsequently searched. Police say they located a bag of green leafy substance that tested positive for THC, weighing about 22.9 grams.
Police also spoke with a witness who claimed she overheard Boocher say, "I haven't seen you in a long time," to the victim before seeing Boocher grab the girl.
