Man accused of robbery at hotel

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - A man was arrested following a reported robbery at a hotel in Roseland on July 24, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Joseph Wingo was arrested on one count of robbery.

At 6:06 a.m. on July 24, officers with the St. Joseph County Police Department responded to a robbery report at a hotel in the 200 block of South Dixie Way in Roseland.

A witness told police he was in the lobby of the hotel when a man wearing a wig, white sunglasses, and baggy clothes came in and jumped over the front desk, reports said.

The man appeared to reach into his waistband as if reaching for a weapon, the witness said.

The witness never saw a weapon.

An employee at the front desk told police that a man in a wig came into the hotel and approached the front desk.

The man tried to hand her a bag and allegedly told her to pull all of the money in it.

The woman said she thought she was being pranked so when she didn't immediately give him the money, the man allegedly jumped over the desk, moved her out of the way, and started taking money out of the cash register.

The woman asked the man, later identified as Wingo, why he was doing this and Wingo said, "I'm homeless. I need this, [expletive deleted]," according to reports.

The woman said she saw Wingo reach into his waistband but did not see a weapon.

Wingo then left the hotel, reports said.

Surveillance footage from the hotel confirmed the two witness stories.

Officers spoke with a manager at a nearby restaurant and she told police that at 6 a.m. that morning, she saw a former employee, identified as Wingo.

The manager said Wingo had recently been fired from the restaurant and seeing him there made her nervous.

The manager saw Wingo walking quickly away from the hotel. He then got onto his bicycle and rode west across S.R. 933, reports said.

The hotel employee was shown a photo array and positively identified Wingo as the man who had robbed the hotel that morning, police said.

Police conducted a search warrant at Wingo's residence while he wasn't there and found multiple wigs inside.

A woman at the residence told police Wingo had been at the residence but left approximately 20 minutes before officers arrived.

Wingo is due in court on August 24.
