SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Four Indiana State Representative, from both sides of the political aisle, have come together to author House Bill 1630 which establishes a procedure for the lawful production and sale of cannabis in Indiana.

The bill, if passed, would remove marijuana, hash oil, and hashish from the state's list of illegal hallucinogenic substances.

The bill is authored by Republican Rep. Heath VanNatter and co-Authored by local District 7 Rep. Jake Teshka, Democratic Rep. Justin Moed, and Republican Rep. Steve Bartels.

Under HB1630, marijuana sales would be taxed at ten percent for every ounce sold.

"A tax is imposed upon the privilege of selling cannabis at a rate of ten percent of the sales price per ounce of cannabis," the bill reads. "This tax shall be paid to the department by the retailer permittee who sells the cannabis.

"The amounts received from the tax imposed by this article shall be transferred by the state comptroller to the cannabis regulation fund."

The bill is still in the very early stages and would need approval by both the state senate and house and would still be subject to a possible veto by newly inaugurated Governor Mike Braun.
