NOW: Local dance company promotes healthy social media habits to students

ELKHART, Ind. -- An Elkhart dance company is tackling the topic of healthy social media habits through dance at local schools.

Epic Dance Studios travels to schools across Michiana to perform a show called “Scrollin’”, which aims to promote positivity in our digital age.

In between different styles of dances, dancers take time to give speeches about different aspects of social media and how to be kind and make positive use of the platforms.

While local dancers have been working to start this conversation in our schools, Indiana senators have been pushing the conversation at the state level.

Senator Spencer Deery introduced a bill into the senate at the beginning of the year with proposals like more parental controls on social media accounts, like limiting access time and direct messages on their child’s account.

While the bill didn’t make it into law, it did spark an important conversation about keeping kids safe while they’re online.

One dancer, Maria Pachano tells me the topic means a lot to her personally, after dealing with negativity from classmates online when she was younger.

Pachano says, “I just think it's very important to teach that right now from a young age so in the future, they can be connected to their classmates and understanding and caring and just have some empathy.”
