LaSalle Park remediation complete, deemed safe by EPA

LaSalle Park

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- At Thursday night's Utility Committee meeting, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency representatives confirmed the remediation of LaSalle Park is complete and is safe for public use.

Officials say an environmental covenant is in place to protect the site and stop remediated soil from being disturbed.

Elevated levels of lead were located at two properties in the Becks Lake residential area, which have since been remedied.

City officials say the EPA plans to hold a community meeting in the fall to provide information, answer questions, and engage with community members about the completed work.

Council President Canneth Lee said the EPA update was reassuring.

“It was reassuring to hear directly from the EPA about the steps taken to ensure proper remediation. As a Council, we want residents to receive accurate, factual information as we continue building trust in our community," said Lee.
