La Porte Community School Corporation bus driver charged with OWI
LA PORTE, Ind. -- A school bus driver in La Porte County has been charged with Felony Operating While Intoxicated.
On Sept. 20, 38-year-old Kayla Pier of Michigan City, was employed as a bus driver for the La Porte Community School Corporation, when she began her routes for a middle school and elementary school.
That evening, several reports surfaced from students aboard the buses about Pier's mannerisms.
The bus was quickly intercepted, and Pier would be removed from driving. She would resign from the corporation that same day.
On Oct.21 La Porte Community School Corporation Superintendent Dr. Sandra Wood got in contact with Administrative Captain Derek J. Allen, informing him of the incident with Peir, and explained that the school corporation had received a toxicology report that Pier submitted to on Sept. 20.
From there an investigation was initiated.
On Dec. 19 a Probable Cause Affidavit was signed and submitted to La Porte County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Autumn Ferch. the La Porte County Circuit found probable cause the next day, where an arrest warrant was than issued for Pier.
Pier self-surrendered to the Warrants Division on Dec. 27 and was booked into the La Porte County Jail. She was later released after bond was posted on her behalf.
