NOW: La Porte homeowners evacuate after uprooted tree causes natural gas leak

LA PORTE, Ind. -- An uprooted tree caused by strong storms severed a gas line underneath the ground on Holcomb St. in La Porte causing a natural gas leak.
The fallen tree rested on a house.
Homeowners in the nearby area were evacuated for a few hours as LaPorte Fire Department and NIPSCO employees worked on the gas leak.
As of around 4:30 p.m. Central Time, the scene was cleared and NIPSCO shut off the gas in order to continue fixing the line.
LaPorte Fire Department told ABC57 only a few homes will be impacted by the gas shut off.
