Kosciusko County holds mock prom crash, gives prom season safety tips

Kosciusko County Sheriff\'s Office

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office worked alongside Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, the Warsaw Police Department, and Lutheran EMS, to hold a mock prom crash at Warsaw High School Friday morning.

Authorities say this serves as a reminder to high school juniors and seniors to enjoy prom, but to remember to stay safe.

Several students dressed in prom attire acted as victims in the crash, complete with fake blood and bruising make-up to replicate potential injuries.

KCSO released the following 10 prom safety tips:

  • Plan Your Transportation in Advance - Decide how you'll get to and from prom—use a designated driver, limo service, or ride-share. Never get in a car with someone who's been drinking.
  • Keep Emergency Contacts Handy - Save important phone numbers in your phone and share your plans with your parents or guardians.
  • Charge Your Phone Fully Before Leaving - Keep your phone charged so you can call for help or stay in touch if needed.
  • Avoid Drugs and Alcohol - Prom is about making memories—not mistakes. Stay sober and encourage your friends to do the same.
  • Watch Your Drinks - Don’t accept open drinks from others and never leave yours unattended to avoid the risk of tampering.
  • Stick With a Trusted Group - Stay with friends you trust and look out for each other throughout the night.
  • Set a Curfew and Check In - Let your parents know your plans and check in if anything changes.
  • Know the Venue Rules - Understand any venue or school policies—especially regarding substance use and safety.
  • Dress Comfortably and Safely - Wear shoes you can walk in and bring a wrap or jacket for warmth if needed.
  • Trust Your Instincts - If something feels wrong, it probably is. Don’t be afraid to speak up or remove yourself from a situation.
