IU dominates Oregon at Peach Bowl, Hoosiers head to Miami
IU Football ATLANTA, Ga. -- Fernando Mendoza threw five touchdown passes, while Indiana's defense forced 3 turnovers in the top-seeded Hoosiers lopsided College Football Playoff semifinals win over Oregon. Undefeated Indiana marches on to their first-ever National Title game with a 56-22 win in the Peach Bowl.
The Heisman Trophy winner, Mendoza, completed 17-of-20 passes for 177 yards. This was Mendoza’s fifth game this year with more touchdowns than incompletions. No other college quarterback has done that more than twice this century.
Charlie Becker, Omar Cooper Jr., Elijah Sarratt, and EJ Williams caught touchdown passes, while Black rushed for 63 yards. Indiana outgained Alabama 185-93 on the ground with an average of 4.6 yards per carry.
The Hoosier defense held the Ducks to 93 yards rushing and the unit was responsible for 21 points off of turnovers. In their last three games, Indiana has beaten Ohio State, Alabama, and Oregon by a combined score of 107-36.
The Hoosiers are headed to Miami to face the Hurricanes, on their home field, in the National Championship game on Jan. 19. It will be a homecoming of sorts for the Mendoza brothers, who attended Columbus High, located about 20 miles from Hard Rock Stadium.
Head Coach Curt Cignetti and his 15-0 Indiana squad are one win away from the first national championship in school history after becoming the first team to advance following a first-round bye in the current 12-team playoff format. Indiana has now improved to 26-2 under Cignetti’s first two seasons, the best record in FBS.
Postgame, Cignetti told ESPN, “I’m not really thinking about the next game, I’m thinking about cracking open a beer.”
Cignetti said the players will have the next couple of days off, before locking in for their title tilt with Miami.
